Ullapool Nature Kid's Creative Approach to Conservation
Have you ever wandered into the Ullapool Library on an evening and found it teeming with activity and excitement? That's the Ullapool Nature Club in full swing, under the guidance of Jenny Grant, the dedicated High Life Highland Ranger for Wester-Ross. This club has become a special spot for young ones keen on exploring the wonders of nature.
At the club, it's all about getting hands-on with nature in the most fun and educational ways. The children engage in activities like crafting bird feeders and creating animal garlands. It's a mix of environmental education and fun, rolled into one.
One of its standout series of sessions in 2023 focused on the fascinating world of hedgehogs. There was an outpouring of enthusiasm as members, both children and adults, delved into learning about these charming creatures. The session was more than just educational; it was about taking action. Participants busied themselves with crafting cozy hedgehog homes, designing informative signs, drawing templates for hedgehog-friendly fence gaps, and gathering leaves to ensure the homes were snug and comfortable. This hands-on approach not only aids the local hedgehog population but also teaches the participants conservation principles and the best ways to care for nature.
The club’s creativity shone brightly in their contribution to the Ullapool Christmas Tree Festival. Here, the young environmentalists showcased their innovative 'treehogs,' a delightful addition to the Ullapool Church of Scotland’s event. These handcrafted decorations, coupled with educational hedgehog facts, have turned the festival into a conservation awareness event as well! Donations collected during the festival are earmarked for the club’s hedgehog project, furthering our efforts in wildlife care and conservation.
For those looking to join in the fun, the club has wrapped up its meetings for 2023 but fear not, they'll be back in 2024 with more exciting activities. Children of all ages are welcome, with younger ones under 5 needing parental supervision. And for parents interested in being more involved, the club always appreciates volunteer helpers!
