I remember one very hot summer, in the 1990s, swimming in a pool below the Falls of Truim. I came to the side and put out my hand towards the wet black cliff beside the falls and reeled back in shock. The surface had a shimmering, transparent covering that caught the light. It was thick with glass eels, wriggling their way upstream past the cascade. Beautiful and a bit unnerving.
